For decades, study co-author Ewan Fordyce, a paleontologist at New Zealand's University of Otago, had been happening across bones of the species while searching for fossil whales and dolphins.

Only recently, though, has a team reconstructed a full skeleton. This composite—created using a model of a modern-day king penguin—represents both species, which were quite similar.

The result is "quite a streamlined animal—it wouldn't look like any penguin that's alive today," said study leader Dan Ksepka, an avian paleontologist at North Carolina State University.

Instead of a modern penguin's rotund shape, each of the newly named species had a narrow chest; long, tapering flippers; and a narrow beak—a body specialized for hunting fish.

Standing about 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) tall, both species would have been taller than the tallest living penguin species, the emperor penguin, which can reach 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall.

In the penguins' time, New Zealand itself was mostly underwater—only a smattering of islets were above the surface. Shallow waves rich with food and protection from predators would've made the habitat ideal for the birds.

Picturing the scene 25 million years ago, Ksepka sees an assortment of various penguins crowded onto remote, rocky outcrops—much like the areas inhabited by modern penguins in New Zealand, though the researcher imagines active volcanoes possibly turning prehistoric skies cloudy with ash.

In a hat tip to that ancient homeland, the team has named the species Kairuku waitaki and Kairuku grebneffi—"kairuku" roughly meaning "diver who returns with food" in the language of New Zealand's indigenous Maori people.

"We've been gaining new insights into giant penguins from other parts of the world," said University of Texas vertebrate paleontologist Julia Clarke, who wasn't involved in the new study.

Clarke herself led a 2010 study describing a new species of ancient giant penguin, the water king, the first fossil penguin discovered with feathers.

But "in New Zealand, where they have one of the peak areas for [giant penguin] diversity, they haven't been really fully described"—making the new reconstruction an important advance, said Clarke, whose work has been supported by the National Geographic Society's Expeditions Council.

Both of the new species lived alongside four other penguin species, each of which likely ate different fish prey—a level of local diversity rare today, study leader Ksepka noted.

A Russian team discovered a seed cache of Silene stenophylla, a flowering plant native to Siberia, that had been buried by an Ice Age squirrel near the banks of the Kolyma River (map). Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the seeds were 32,000 years old.

The mature and immature seeds, which had been entirely encased in ice, were unearthed from 124 feet (38 meters) below the permafrost, surrounded by layers that included mammoth, bison, and woolly rhinoceros bones.

The mature seeds had been damaged—perhaps by the squirrel itself, to prevent them from germinating in the burrow. But some of the immature seeds retained viable plant material.

The team extracted that tissue from the frozen seeds, placed it in vials, and successfully germinated the plants, according to a new study. The plants—identical to each other but with different flower shapes from modern S. stenophylla—grew, flowered, and, after a year, created seeds of their own.

"I can't see any intrinsic fault in the article," said botanist Peter Raven, President Emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden, who was not involved in the study. "Though it's such an extraordinary report that of course you'd want to repeat it."

Raven is also head of National Geographic's Committee for Research and Exploration. (The Society owns National Geographic News.)

Plant Study May Help Seed Vaults?

The new study suggests that permafrost could be a "depository for an ancient gene pool," a place where any number of now extinct species could be found and resurrected, experts say.

"Certainly some of the plants that were cultivated in ancient times and have gone extinct or other plants once important to ecosystems which have disappeared would be very useful today if they could be brought back," said Elaine Solowey, a botanist at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel.

Solowey resurrected the 2,000-year-old date palm that previously held the title of oldest regenerated seed.

Her palm seed, though, had been buried in a dry, cool area, a far cry from the S. stenophylla seeds' permafrost environment.

Regenerating seeds that have been frozen at 19 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 degrees Celsius) for so long could have major implications, said Solowey, who was not involved in the new study.

That's because all seed-saving projects—the most famous being perhaps Norway's so-called doomsday vault, aka the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (see pictures)—depend on freezing seeds.

"Any insight gained on seeds which have been frozen and how to thaw them and sprout them is very valuable," she said.

The Missouri Botanical Garden's Raven added that, if we can uncover the conditions that kept the seeds viable for 32,000 years, then "if you were doing it yourself, you'd be able to preserve [seeds] for longer."
sidiqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00777979136231109563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233601972018854995.post-11247650188771188802012-02-25T04:45:00.002+07:002012-02-25T10:30:49.885+07:00Earth Spun Faster in 2009 Due to Ocean Current?

<strike></strike>

Did it feel like time flew in November 2009? It turns out the days were actually going a wee bit faster for part of that month, according to a team of NASA and European scientists.
Earth spun about 0.1 millisecond faster for a two-week stretch, said study co-author Steven Marcus, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The planet's speedier spin appears to have been due to a slowdown in an ocean current that whips around Antarctica.
(Related: "Japan's Earthquake Shortened Days, Increased Wobble.")
"The Earth speeding up is just like a [twirling ice] skater pulling in her arms," he explained. When the skater does this, she spins faster, because the laws of physics dictate that her body must conserve what's called angular momentum.
"When [the skater] sticks out her arms, they move pretty fast, because there's a big circle. When she pulls in her arms, the circle is smaller, so in order to have the same angular momentum, she has to speed up," Marcus said.
"It is the same with the Earth," in the sense that if an ocean current slows down, the planet's spin must speed up to conserve angular momentum.
Scientists have long known that changes in the speed of ocean and atmospheric currents can—and do—slightly affect the rate of Earth's rotation and, hence, the length of a day.
"The thing is, with the ocean the effect is a lot weaker, since the ocean flows a lot slower than the atmosphere," Marcus said.

But in November 2009, he said, a slowdown in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current "seemed to be a lot stronger than usual, and that's probably what made it large enough to be detected in the Earth's spin data."
Ocean's "Weird Behavior"
The paper on Earth's brief speedup—which was recently accepted for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters—is the third study so far by NASA scientists to note unusual conditions in the Southern Ocean in the final months of 2009.
The earlier papers had reported record high ocean-surface temperatures in the southeast Pacific and record high ocean-bottom pressures in the same area.
In a separate paper by JPL's Tong Lee, published last August in GRL, researchers suggest this weirdness could be due to an unusual El Niño in 2009.
In a typical El Niño, the surface waters near the northwest coast of South America get warmer than normal. But in 2009 the warmer waters were concentrated in the central Pacific, in a type of El Niño called a Modoki.
Marcus's new paper now adds this "strange behavior" of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current to the mix, he said.
(Related: "Venus Spinning Slower Than Thought—Scientists Stumped.")
"The El Niño (central Pacific or otherwise) can link to the ACC through the atmosphere, on a time scale of days (much more rapidly than ocean currents). This is called the atmospheric 'bridge' ... between different parts of the globe," Marcus said in an email.
Faster Times Ahead?
Scientists are still debating whether Modokis are becoming more common, but "it looks like they might be, based on observations of the past few decades,"Samantha Stevenson, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii, said in an email.
Experts also lack sufficient data to say whether a trend toward more Modokis would be due to natural variability or human-induced global warming.
If the latter, then months when time flies by faster could become more common.
(Related: "Earth's Core Spins Faster Than Surface, Study Confirms.")
"An El Niño or La Niña event generates an atmospheric wave that propagates down into the Southern Hemisphere and can affect the circulation there," Stevenson said.
"If the atmospheric circulation changes, then so will the ocean, so you could get an Antarctic influence from [El Niño/La Niña] that way that might potentially change due to global warming.
"But as far as I know, no one has figured out exactly how much climate change will affect the ocean's response to El Niño in the Antarctic."sidiqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00777979136231109563noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233601972018854995.post-79057089006393711572012-02-25T04:38:00.002+07:002012-02-25T04:41:27.073+07:00New Ultradense Planet Found; Astronomers Baffled

Dubbed CoRoT-20b, the planet is thought to be a gas giant about four-fifths the size of Jupiter and orbits close to a sunlike star.

Despite the new planet's relatively diminutive size, this world has four times Jupiter's mass, making CoRoT-20b one of the densest known planets, a new study says.

That poses a problem for astronomers: If CoRoT-20b is structured like a traditional gas giant, with a solid core surrounded by a gassy atmosphere, the planet's core would have to make up 50 to 77 percent of the world's total mass.

By contrast, Jupiter's core is thought to represent just 15 percent of that planet's mass.

To have such a robust core, CoRoT-20b would defy current theories for how planets form.

Astronomers think planets are born from disks of debris that surround newborn stars. In our solar system, the sun's so-called protoplanetary disk gave rise to several worlds and still had leftovers from planet formation—what we callasteroids and comets.

However, the new study says that CoRoT-20b would have had to have sucked up every last atom of material heavier than helium from its star's protoplanetary disk to form the planet's massive core.

"That is something difficult to understand, and to admit," said study leader Magali Deleuil, of the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Marseilles in France.

Another possibility, Deleuil said, is that the planet's heavy elements are mixed throughout its atmosphere rather than embedded in a central core—but this would mean the world represents a completely new class of planet.

Dense World Has Stellar Synchronicity?

The ultradense planet was discovered last year by the European CoRoT mission, a space telescope that searches for the telltale dimming when a planet passes in front of its host star, as seen from Earth.

The team followed up with measurements from the HARPS instrument in Chile, which watches for the gravitational "wobble" of a star due to the tug of an orbiting planet.

The combined measurements allowed the astronomers to confirm the planet's size and mass as well as its orbital path—a highly elliptical one that brings the world a mere 8,366,029 miles (13,463,820 kilometers) from its host star at its farthest point.

The team considered whether CoRoT-20b could have been much bigger originally, and perhaps its lighter elements had been stripped away by its parent star.

But CoRoT-20b is in a fairly stable orbit that doesn't pass within the host star's Roche limit, the boundary beyond which a planet would be subjected to stellar stripping.

"If the planet has lost part of its globe, it appears smaller than you would expect because of the loss. But that happens if your planet is entering the Roche limit, and that's not the case for this planet."

In fact, Deleuil said, the planet is approaching what's known as Darwin stability—named not for the famed naturalist but for his son George, an astronomer.

Darwin stability is when a planet and star have settled into a triple-synchronized state: The star's spin about its axis is equal to the planet's spin, which in turn is equal to the planet's orbital speed.

sidiqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00777979136231109563noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233601972018854995.post-11734000766674759912010-02-04T19:03:00.002+07:002010-02-05T16:15:39.868+07:00Internet Sebagai Layanan Informasi Dunia

Fungsi Negatif:

- Internet dijadikan usaha penipuan

sidiqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00777979136231109563noreply@blogger.com0
